As AI becomes our digital roommate, the question of its fairness looms large. A new study by the Meaning Alignment Institute proposes a novel approach called Moral Graph Elicitation (MGE) to tackle this challenge. Here's what it means for the future of AI.



Why User Goals Aren't Enough

We often think of AI aligning with our goals, like a helpful shopping assistant. But the study argues this is shortsighted. Imagine an AI managing investments – the blind pursuit of profit could lead to ethically dubious choices. MGE proposes going deeper, aligning AI with our fundamental values.

The Wisdom of the Crowd: Value Cards and Moral Graphs

MGE uses two key tools: value cards and a moral graph. Think of value cards as flashcards for AI, capturing what matters in specific situations. For example, a "friendship advice" card might emphasize empathy or offer helpful resources.

The moral graph then connects these cards, showing which values are most relevant. This is where the crowd comes in – people compare cards, collectively deciding which offers the wisest guidance. It's like harnessing the wisdom of the masses to build a compass for AI.

Early Signs are Promising

The study tested MGE with 500 Americans on hot-button topics like abortion and parenting. The results are encouraging – nearly 90% of participants felt the process represented them well and believed the final moral graphs were fair.

Crowdsourcing: A Powerful Tool, But Not Without Challenges

While crowdsourcing holds promise, it's not a silver bullet. The study acknowledges limitations. History shows the majority doesn't always get it right. We need to ensure marginalized voices are heard and complex issues aren't oversimplified. Additionally, globally accepted principles might differ across cultures.


The Road Ahead

Despite limitations, this study offers a valuable new approach. MGE joins efforts like Anthropic's Collective Constitutional AI in the quest for value-driven AI. Every attempt brings us closer to AI that reflects our best selves, not just our wants.

This is an exciting development, but the journey is far from over. We need to refine these methods and grapple with the ethical considerations of crowdsourcing human values in an increasingly interconnected world. The future of AI is being shaped now, and this study is a positive step towards ensuring it serves humanity as a whole.
