The Future of Job Applications: How AI is Shaping the Hiring Process

OpenAI's ChatGPT has been making waves since its release in November 2022. The chatbot allows anyone with internet access to generate anything in written form, from intricate essays and code to succinct memos and poetry. With just a basic prompt, ChatGPT can complete complex, written tasks in moments, making it a valuable creative tool for quickly producing efficient content.

One of the benefits of ChatGPT is that it allows people who may not possess the best writing skills to suddenly have them. Vince Miller, a reader in sociology and cultural studies at the University of Kent, UK, has seen his students use ChatGPT to write appeals for parking tickets, among other things. Job seekers are also reporting benefits from using ChatGPT, as the chatbot can compose convincing cover letters on demand and synthesize a few career details into a competent, bullet-pointed CV. Users can even copy and paste the AI-generated text straight into an email and send it to a hiring manager.

However, hiring managers are aware of the growing trend of generative AI being used to assist job seekers. This trend could lead to a shift in the traditional modes of evaluating candidates, as recruiters adapt to new technologies. For instance, generative AI can create pre-interview presentations, which could lead employers to introduce harder assessments that demand more creative and abstract thought from candidates. The onus is on recruiters to test and evaluate what the machines can't do. While generative AI can arrange data in an interesting way, it's not particularly creative as it can only work with what already exists.

Brooke Weddle, a partner at consulting firm McKinsey & Company based in Washington, DC, believes that there could be a greater emphasis on scrutinizing candidates in face-to-face settings. Employers look hard at cultural fit and soft skills during the interview process, which is something that covers letters typically don't convey much information on. Furthermore, some recruiters are already embracing new AI tools to test job seekers' qualities through skill- and personality assessments. These assessments use data-driven behavioral insights to match candidates against vacancies and reveal their soft skills. As we move towards skills-based hiring, this kind of emerging platform that gives recruiters more data on candidates is likely to change the job application process significantly.

While ChatGPT and other generative AI technologies may help job seekers produce more polished application materials, recruiters are already adapting their hiring processes to account for this technology. As we move towards a skills-based hiring approach, emerging AI tools like skill- and personality assessments are likely to become even more prevalent, further changing the job application process.
